Community Organization Spotlight
Name of Organization: SETU (Stage Ensemble Theater Unit)
Description of organization, history and mission statements:
- SETU is a 501 (C) (3) non-profit theater group in the greater Boston area. Through powerful English-language productions, SETU builds a living bridge between India and the world, between history and the present, between tradition and reinvention. Its stage becomes a meeting ground where India’s layered social, political, and economic realities unfold with honesty and nuance, celebrating the brilliance of its cultural inheritance while courageously examining its social contradictions. SETU is a 100% volunteer driven organization.
- SETU was founded in 2003. SETU’s founding members include Subrata Das, Jayanti Bandyopadhyay, Rita Sengupta, Charubrata Ray, Debasish Raychaudhury, and late Deepak Deb. The debut production was Tendulkar’s Kamala. SETU has staged over 25 plays since its inception.
- SETU means “bridge” in several Indian languages and our mission is to build bridges between Indian and Western cultures through storytelling, using theater as a living bridge between cultures, histories, and perspectives.
Paragraph by organization entity (5-7 sentences):
SETU: meaning bridge, lives up to its name by connecting cultures through the transformative power of theater.
At its heart, SETU is a community-powered artistic movement that invites individuals to step into the creative process as actors, directors, dancers, designers, technicians, and storytellers. Those who join as performers receive rigorous training, emerging not only as actors but as thoughtful interpreters of culture and character; many have gone on to participate in film and stage productions beyond the organization.
Deeply rooted in classical and folk traditions yet relevant to today’s world, SETU’s performances spark dialogue, connection, and cross-cultural understanding. For over two decades, SETU has brought engaging English-language productions to local audiences, presenting stories that reflect India’s rich cultural heritage alongside its contemporary social realities. The organization has also raised funds for charitable causes in association with IAGB, EKAL, IFNET and more and promotes awareness of social issues through meaningful artistic expression.
Community participation lies at the heart of SETU’s mission. SETU continues to serve as a vibrant platform for artistic growth, cultural preservation, and community connection by welcoming individuals of all backgrounds to participate as performers, creators, and volunteers.
